Why You Can’t Relax (And What It’s Really Costing You in Your Business)

Ever feel like no matter how hard you try to “relax,” your mind just won’t switch off? You light the candles, take deep breaths, maybe even put on some calming music, but inside, it still feels like a storm is raging.
The problem isn’t you or your style of relaxation (let’s not try to blame the candles here), it’s your nervous system.
In this post, we’re going to unpack the real reason why you can’t seem to relax (no matter how much you want to), and how this hidden stress cycle could be sabotaging your business success without you even realising it.
Why You Can’t Relax (the Sciency Bit)
Your body is wired for survival, not success. It’s designed to keep you safe if you’re being hunted by a wild animal, but it’s not designed for the 24/7 plugged-in, online world we live in.
When your brain perceives a threat, whether it’s a missed deadline, a critical DM, or a launch that didn’t go as planned, it reacts as if you’re being chased by a lion.
Hello, fight-or-flight!
This ancient response pumps your body full of cortisol and adrenaline, your muscles tense, your breathing becomes shallow, and your mind races with thoughts like:
“I need to fix this immediately.”
“What if this ruins everything?”
“Why can’t I just get it together?”
Sound familiar?
Your nervous system runs on autopilot and doesn’t use your logical brain. That means it doesn’t differentiate between actual danger and perceived stress. So even when you sit down with your peppermint tea and try to journal, your body is still running the stress program in the background.
And that program? It doesn’t switch off just because you want it to.
Why Positive Thinking Isn’t Always Enough
Listen, I LOVE a good affirmation and some positive thinking. Mindset work is HUGE. But let’s go a little deeper – if your body is stuck in survival mode, those tools might feel like trying to put out a fire with a teacup of water.
This is where so many biz owners get stuck. We focus SO intently on mindset and strategies when what we really need is nervous system regulation.
Your nervous system controls everything: your energy, focus, decision-making, clarity, and even your ability to feel safe receiving. If your body doesn’t feel safe, if it’s holding onto unprocessed stress or tension, you’ll find yourself:
- Procrastinating on the things you know would move the needle.
- Doubting your decisions and second-guessing your intuition.
- Burning out over and over again.
This is the hidden reason so many soulful, ambitious business owners stay stuck in cycles of hustle, burnout, and frustration.
The Real-World Impact on Your Business
So what does all of this mean for your business?
1. You Struggle to Stay Focused
When your nervous system is dysregulated, focus becomes almost impossible. That brain fog? The inability to sit down and write that sales page? The endless task-switching and scrolling? They’re all signs of a body stuck in flight-or-flight.
You’re not lazy or unmotivated (I honestly thought this about myself for the longest time!), your brain is just prioritising survival over business strategy.
2. Your Creativity Takes a Hit
Creativity is simply not a priority when you’re in survival mode. Cute Canva graphics and witty launch emails aren’t going to help you run away from that lion! When you’re in fight-or-flight mode, your creative flow gets blocked.
That’s why your best ideas come when you’re in the shower or out walking the dog – because you’re more relaxed then.
3. You start Avoiding Important Tasks
Ever notice how stress makes you want to avoid the exact thing you need to do? That uncomfortable email, the follow-up message, launching your offer…
Stress hijacks your executive function and makes everything feel 10x harder than it actually is. So you delay, freeze, or numb out. Not because you don’t care or you’re lazy, but because your system is overwhelmed. And guess what? When you avoid doing those things, you get even more stressed and overwhelmed!
4. Your Energy Feels Inconsistent
You’re either on a high or totally depleted. There is no in-between. You power through launches on pure adrenaline, then crash HARD after. There are days when you’re building an empire, and days when you want to give it all up.
And quite frankly, these highs and lows are utterly exhausting!
The Solution is NOT About Working Harder
This isn’t about hustling harder or learning another business strategy. You don’t need another planner, productivity hack, or fancy project management tool (oooft calling myself out with that one!!!)
You need a regulated nervous system that allows you to feel calm, focused, and in control, even when things get busy or unpredictable. Because that’s exactly what happens when you’re running a business.
When your nervous system feels safe, your business starts to thrive. You talk bolder actions, you stop second-guessing yourself and trust your decisions, you feel more present with clients and your launches flow with more ease.
And most importantly? You feel better in your life AND your business.
So how do you do it?
The great news is that you don’t need a 3-week retreat in Bali to start shifting things. You don’t even need to block off hours in your dat.
All you need is 5 intentional minutes so I created this 5-Minute Stress Reset Guide to help business owners like you to claim your nervous system quickly and easily.
You don’t need to keep trying to think your way out of stress, or keep pushing through it. You just need the right tools to work with your body, not against it.
